Mission Opportunities & Updates

We at Saint Paul’s Waccamaw UMC have been blessed with the opportunity to assist several wonderful organizations that help people in need.

Together, we can make a difference!

Friendship Place

Friendship Place is an ongoing mission opportunity, where we provide volunteers to serve lunch on the 2nd Monday of every month. One of Friendship Place’s functions is to serve as many as 75 lunches per day, 5 days a week to Georgetown County men, women and children in need of a helping hand up-not a hand out. If you would like to join the team of volunteers or find out more about this opportunity to serve, please contact Linda Beale.

St. Paul’s Waccamaw UMC Literally Helps Save Lives

At every Street Reach graduation, several Disciples tell those gathered that the program they have gone through over the previous 6 months saved their lives. Here is a one story from the daughter of a local resident.

Before I became a disciple at Street Reach and before many years of active addictions, which brought me here, I had always had it in my heart to help people. With two years of college and an Associates degree in business, I never thought it was possible. Ever since stepping foot in Street Reach I have felt like I was home. The discipleship program has helped me much more than any of the rehabs that I had tried in the past ever could. I’ve learned about recovery, who I am deep down, but most importantly about the very God who has led me to where I am now, all the while being in the position to see past my own problems and reach out to people in need. Learning what Jesus Christ has done for me truly does make Him my personal Savior. He has saved me from myself and my past. Since graduating this program, Miss Libby has hired me as an employee. By helping out with the computer and office work. I feel that God has blessed me by putting me right where I belong at just the right time where I can use my administrative skills in a ministry that helps people. My only hope is that I am able to pay back just some of the blessings that I have received since I have been here. - Suzy

God’s work on earth depends upon us. Here are some of the other local missions that St. Paul’s supports which are critical to the survival of many people in our community.

  • The Coastal Samaritan Counseling Center - in 2009 helped 760 clients with a variety of mental health and emotional problems. The number of clients has increased by 89% since 2007.
Habitat for Humanity of Georgetown County
  • JOY School - a 6-week summer “camp” for more than 40 local disabled children and young adults
  • Miss Ruby’s Kids - an early literacy program which is free to children at risk of school failure because learning to read at an early age leads to HS graduates
  • The Outreach Farm - which will provide beef for 42,000 meals for the hungry in 2010
  • St. Christopher’s Children - a relatively new organization which, for the past 3 years, has provided clothing, eye glasses and dental care for the abandoned, abused and economically disadvantaged children in Georgetown County. By the end of 2010, St. Christopher’s Children will have helped about 580 of the approximately 800 children scattered throughout the county whose needs cannot be met by existing social services or government agencies.
  • Service Over Self - a program to instill an ethic of service among Georgetown County youth
  • Tara Hall - a Christian-based home for neglected, troubled and abused boys
  • Teach My People - a local after-school program for at-risk children
  • Teen Challenge - which helps teens and young adults live a drug-free life. Teen Challenge’s recovery program has a documented success rate of over 80% nationally, and the Georgetown location helps over 100 families per year.
  • Tidelands Community Hospice - which provides compassionate services for people with life-limiting illnesses and their families.
