Outreach Farm -
Your St. Paul’s Waccamaw Missions Committee voted to support The Outreach Farm, a nonprofit cattle farm on leased acreage in Hemingway. This is an all-volunteer mission, whose vision is to eventually
provide beef to feed the hungry in 10 coastal counties. It was started just over a year ago by Mike LoVullo, a local builder and humanitarian. The Farm is overseen by a board of directors.
All funding is provided by voluntary donations such as ours, and from grants from foundations such as the Bunnelle Foundation in Georgetown. At present there are nearly 30 head of cattle, including cows, heifers, calves and a bull. The herd is increasing with the births of spring calves. Participating Partners in this wonderful venture are Friendship Place at St. Cyprian’s Church in Georgetown, Teach My People and Tara Hall for Boys. Any surplus will eventually be donated to the Low Country Food Bank in Charleston.
Additional Heifers will be purchased as donations continue to come in.
In 2007, the farm provided beef for 25,000 meals at organizations such as Tara Hall, Friendship Place, Pawleys Island Child Care Center and Teach My People. The boys from Tara Hall are particularly active in this venture. They are helping to grow crops like potatoes, peanuts, onions and watermelon, and have helped with the deliveries of the meat. In the local community there are 6 cows on the Rossdu Plantation vacant field on Waverly Road.
Media coverage has been particularly good from local TV stations and newspapers, and there has been national coverage via
“Southern Living” (May 2007).
This is truly a worthy venture in feeding the hungry.
